Theoretically, nothing is stopping you from working out, working on something important, reading, or finally taking care of what you have been putting off for a few days. There is time. There was a plan too. And yet, instead of starting, you sit with your phone and think: “Why do I feel like doing nothing again?”. The first answer often appears automatically: I lack motivation. Maybe. But not necessarily. Sometimes the problem is not that you do not care enough or that you need another dose of motivation. You may simply not have enough resources at that moment to do what you expect of yourself. And if you confuse one with the other, it is easy to start solving a problem that is not the one you actually have.

I have time, so why don’t I feel like doing anything?

It is easy to treat time as the main condition for taking action. If I have two free hours, I should be able to use them. If I am not working today, I should have the energy for a workout. If the evening is free, I can still do a few things. But free time and available resources are not the same thing. You can have an hour in your calendar, but at the same time be tired after work. You can have a day off, but your head can be occupied with ten different things. You can physically be sitting on the couch and “doing nothing,” while at the same time feeling that another decision, task, or obligation is already too much. Prolonged cognitive effort can affect perceived fatigue and readiness to undertake further effort. At the same time, the relationship between fatigue, motivation, and action is more complex than a simple “I either have motivation or I don’t.” That is why two people who have the same free hour do not necessarily have the same capabilities. What is more, you at 10:00 a.m. and you at 7:00 p.m. may have completely different capabilities, even though an hour still has exactly 60 minutes.

Lack of motivation or lack of resources?

“I don’t feel like it” is a very broad message. It can mean many different things. Maybe you really do not feel like doing something. But you may just as well not have the energy. You may be overloaded. You may have difficulty focusing your attention. The task may be too big for your current capabilities. You may need rest or simply have had a day that cost you more than you initially expected. And this is where an important distinction appears: “I don’t want to do this” and “I don’t have enough resources right now to do this in the planned version” do not mean the same thing. If you do not distinguish between the two, every difficulty with starting an activity may look like a problem with motivation.

Imagine that in the morning you plan a thirty-minute workout. After work, you come home exhausted and discover that at the very thought of exercising, you feel like hiding under a blanket. The plan has not changed. You, however, are no longer in the same state you were in when you were making it. Something that, with a large amount of energy, seems relatively easy may be perceived as much more demanding when you are tired. It is similar with attention and mental space. Not all tasks require the same thing from you. You may have the strength to do the laundry, but not have the space to write an important text. You may have the energy for a walk, but not for making another decision. You may be able to perform a simple, automatic activity without much difficulty, while at the same time putting off a task that requires concentration.

That is why the question “Do I have time?” is often insufficient. A better one may be: “What does this particular task require of me?” Focus? Creativity? Physical energy? Making decisions? Contact with other people? Patience? Only then can you check whether what the task requires is actually available today.

Sometimes the problem may also be overload. If the whole day was full of decisions, information, conversations, notifications, and tasks, the solution will not necessarily be another video about productivity, another to-do list, or convincing yourself that “you need to pull yourself together.” It is worth remembering that expressions such as “I have 20% battery today” are a metaphor, not an actual measurement of mental or physical resources. The point is not to precisely determine your energy level. The point is to notice a simple fact: today my capabilities may be more limited than they were when I made this plan.

And sometimes you really just don’t feel like it. And that also does not have to be automatically treated as a problem to be fixed. Perhaps you have the energy, time, and space, but for weeks you have been avoiding one specific task. Then it is worth looking at something else. Is this task important to you? Is it yours? Do you know why you are doing it? Is it unpleasant, boring, or unclear? Are you trying to do something because you really want to, or because you feel that you “should”? A lack of desire is also information. Not every reluctance needs to be overcome immediately.

Why doesn’t adding more motivation always help?

Imagine a phone with 8% battery. You can open five apps, turn on music, and increase the screen brightness. None of these things, however, solves the problem you actually have. It can be similar with taking action. If the real obstacle is fatigue, overload, or a plan that is too big in relation to your current capabilities, trying to motivate yourself even more may not address the source of the problem. This does not mean, however, that every time you do not feel like doing anything, you are simply tired. Motivation, effort, and fatigue influence one another. So the point is not to replace one simple answer with another, but to expand the number of possible answers.

If every time you do not follow through with the plan, you come to the conclusion: “once again, I lacked motivation,” you may start looking for a solution exclusively in greater discipline. I need to stop putting things off. I need to force myself. I need to organize my time better. Meanwhile, sometimes the problem is simply a mismatch between the plan and your current capabilities. The plan was prepared by you in your 100% version. Then a 50% day comes. Or 20%. And you still try to carry out a plan written for your most productive version. When it does not work out, instead of changing the plan, you start judging yourself.

Before you start motivating yourself, check what you are really lacking.

The next time the thought “I don’t feel like doing anything” appears, do not try to fight it immediately. Stay with it for a moment. Think about the specific thing you cannot start and ask: “What does this action require of me?” Then: “Do I have that available today?” If you want to do a workout, you need, among other things, physical energy. If you want to write a difficult text, you also need attention and mental space. If you want to take care of an important matter, perhaps you need focus and readiness to make decisions. And if you do not have as much of that today as you had assumed, another question arises: “Can I change the scale of the action without completely giving up on the direction?”

A plan for 100% does not have to apply on a 20% day. In the morning, you plan thirty minutes of exercise. In the evening, you have significantly less energy. The most automatic options sound like: thirty minutes or nothing. And yet there is a huge space between them. Maybe today it will be fifteen minutes of gentle movement. Maybe five minutes of stretching. And sometimes the conscious decision will be to rest. It is similar with other things. You do not have the space to write an entire article? You can prepare the structure. You do not have the energy for a thorough cleaning? You can do one thing. You do not have the focus needed for an hour of studying? You can devote ten minutes to it. This does not mean that you always have to do something at all costs. Sometimes the best way to adjust the plan to your capabilities will be precisely to let go of taking action and recover.

Flexibility does not mean that you always do less. It means that you stop expecting exactly the same level of performance from yourself regardless of the day and circumstances.

A short reflection: what are you really lacking today?

Take one thing that you are putting off or that you did not do today. Think about: What do I want to do? What does this action require of me? What do I have available today? What am I lacking? What could a version of this action adapted to my current capabilities look like? And only then answer the question: “Did I really lack motivation?” Maybe so. But perhaps you will see that the problem lay elsewhere.

Not every day needs more motivation

Motivation is important. However, it is not the answer to everything. Sometimes you need action. Sometimes you need to simplify the plan. Sometimes you need rest. Sometimes you need to regain concentration. Sometimes you need to think about why you are actually trying to do a particular thing. And sometimes you really do need an impulse that will help you start. So the most important thing is not to force yourself to act every time, but to become better and better at recognizing, what is actually happening to you at a given moment and what you need in order to be able to act.Because “I don’t feel like it” is not an answer yet. It is only the beginning of the question.

Masz wolne popołudnie.
