You look back at what you've done and can't really see anything out of the ordinary. You didn't have an unusually heavy workload. You didn't have ten different things to take care of. Maybe you even spent most of the day at home. And yet, by the evening, you feel as though someone has drained every last bit of energy out of you. That's when it's easy to start thinking, “But I barely did anything today. Why am I so tired?” The problem is that when we think about how much a day has taken out of us, we tend to focus on things we can see and count. Work. Shopping. Cleaning. Exercise. A meeting. A to-do list. But our energy can also be drained by things that never make it onto any list.

Fatigue doesn't always reflect how many tasks you've completed.

Imagine a day when you don't have much to do. In the morning, you check your phone while you're still in bed. You read messages, scroll through social media, and reply to a few texts. You watch something while having breakfast. Later, you try to get one thing done, but you keep going back to your phone. You remember something you need to take care of next week. Someone sends you a message. There's noise outside your window. You put on some music. Then a movie. While watching the movie, you pick up your phone again. If someone asked you that evening, “What did you do today?”, your answer might be, “Not much, really.” But that doesn't mean nothing was demanding your attention throughout the day. And this is where it's worth broadening the way we think about our own resources. The demands of a day don't come only from big tasks. They can also build up from lots of little things that constantly pull your attention in different directions. Research on using multiple forms of media at the same time shows that processing several streams of information places demands on our attention and cognitive control. At the same time, research findings on the long-term effects of what's known as media multitasking are mixed, so there's no solid basis for simplifying the issue to “phones destroy your ability to concentrate.” It's more accurate to say that constantly switching between different sources of information is yet another task our minds have to handle.

What exactly is overstimulation?

The word “overstimulation” is used very often these days. However, it's not a specific diagnosis you can give yourself based on a few symptoms. In everyday language, it describes a state in which the number, intensity, or constant flow of stimuli reaching us becomes difficult to process comfortably. And it's not just about loud music, bright lights, or crowded places. A stimulus can be the sound of a notification. A conversation happening nearby. Another message. A video playing in the background. New information. Having to make a decision. Switching between apps. Trying to concentrate while constantly checking your phone. Then there's also our inner world. An unfinished conversation. A decision you've been putting off. Something you're afraid you'll forget. A thought that keeps coming back several times throughout the day. Not everything affects everyone in the same way. What feels like neutral background noise to one person may be exhausting to another. Even for the same person, tolerance for stimulation can vary from day to day. That's why, rather than creating a universal list of “bad stimuli,” it's more important to learn to recognize your own reactions.

Stimuli that never make it onto your to-do list

Imagine two people. The first has five specific things to do. She works through them one by one, has some quiet time in between, and finishes her work in the evening. The second person has only two tasks. But while working on the first one, she checks her phone a dozen times. She replies to messages. Halfway through, she remembers something else. She opens another tab. Someone calls her. She goes back to her task. She puts something on in the background. She checks her phone again. Which one should be more tired? You can't determine that simply by counting how many tasks they've completed. This matters because we often judge our own exhaustion in exactly this way: “I haven't done enough to deserve to feel tired.” But exhaustion doesn't need anyone's approval. You can simply start paying attention to what happens before you reach the point where you feel like everything is just too much.

Why doesn't lying on the couch always mean you're recharging?

After a difficult day, you lie down on the couch. Finally, there's nothing you have to do. You pick up your phone. For the next forty minutes, you watch short videos. Then you reply to a message. You put on a TV series. While watching, you check your phone again. Physically, you really are resting. But that doesn't automatically mean your attention is getting a break too. This distinction matters: having no responsibilities isn't the same as having no information coming in. And it doesn't mean that scrolling, watching a series, or listening to a podcast are “bad ways to rest.” They can be enjoyable, relaxing, and exactly what you need that evening. The problem is more likely to arise when we automatically fill every free moment with another stream of content, then wonder why doing nothing hasn't left us feeling as refreshed as we'd hoped. Research on media multitasking doesn't support a simple conclusion that “more media = a worse brain.” Findings vary between studies, and the links between frequent media multitasking and attention-related functioning are often small or inconclusive. That's another reason to focus on observing how we use technology and how it affects us, rather than demonizing it.

It's worth matching your rest to what has left you feeling tired.

Sometimes you simply need to lie down and stop expecting anything of yourself. Other times, your body isn't actually the most tired part of you. If you've spent several hours in a noisy environment, you might need some peace and quiet. If you've been making decisions all day, you may not feel like making another choice. If you've been constantly switching between different sources of information, maybe it's your attention that needs a moment when it doesn't have to process anything new. So it's not about creating the perfect rest routine. It's about asking yourself a more specific question: What exactly am I tired of right now? Because sometimes, “everything” really is the answer. But other times, after giving it a little thought, you might realize that what's exhausting you most is the noise. Or people. Or making decisions. Or screens. Or that one thing that's been on your mind since this morning. And once you start noticing these things, it becomes easier to figure out what you need less of.

Before you try to fix your fatigue, find out what's causing it

When we feel overwhelmed, we often try to do something about it immediately. Turn off our phones. Meditate. Go to bed earlier. Cancel plans. Take a “sensory detox.” But the first step doesn't necessarily have to involve eliminating anything. You can start by simply taking a closer look at your day. Instead of asking, “What did I do today?”, ask yourself, “What kept demanding my attention throughout the day?” That's a completely different list. It might include things you'd never put on your calendar: notifications, noise, several conversations happening at once, worrying about something, constantly checking your phone, having to make small decisions, or interrupting one activity to do another. You don't have to do anything about it right away. First, just notice what's actually there.

Exercise: mapping your invisible burdens

Take a piece of paper or open a blank note. Think about your day so far, but don't write down your responsibilities. Instead, list the things that repeatedly took up some of your attention. You can look at a few different areas: your surroundings, your phone and the information you consume, interactions with other people, things that require decisions, and matters that have been lingering in the back of your mind. For each thing you write down, ask yourself one question: “After engaging with this, do I feel like I have more, the same amount, or less mental space?” The point isn't to judge whether something is good or bad. A conversation with someone close to you might give you energy one day and feel like another burden the next. Music might help you unwind, or it might be exactly the kind of noise you've already had too much of. Your phone might give you a moment of enjoyment, or it might leave you feeling even more overwhelmed after thirty minutes. When you're done, look at your list. Don't choose five things to change. Choose one. Maybe you'll leave your phone in another room for twenty minutes. Maybe you'll come home from work without listening to a podcast through your headphones. Maybe you'll finally take care of one unfinished task. Or maybe you'll consciously decide not to take in any new information for the next half hour. Then check in with yourself and see how you feel. Not to create another rule you have to follow. But to get to know your own resources better.

Not every exhausting day looks like a difficult one

This is probably the most important thing to take away from this topic. You can't always judge how much a day has taken out of you by looking at the number of tasks you've completed. Sometimes, what's most exhausting isn't one big responsibility, but dozens of little things that keep demanding small pieces of your attention for hours. So the next time you find yourself thinking in the evening, “But I barely did anything today. Why am I so tired?”, try not to stop at the first part of that thought. Instead, ask yourself: “What kept demanding something from me throughout the day?”. The answer might tell you much more about your own resources than a list of completed tasks ever could.

Są takie dni, po których trudno zrozumieć własne zmęczenie.
