Duality in relationships – How to reconcile the desire for closeness with the need for freedom?

Relationships are one of the most important areas of our lives, but also one of the most demanding. Every relationship touches two deep needs within us: the desire for closeness and the need for freedom. On one hand, we want to feel loved, seen, and safe with another person; on the other, we need space in which we can breathe, grow, and remain ourselves. This duality in relationships is natural and does not mean that you are doing something wrong.

Difficulties arise when we try to choose only one side. When we focus solely on closeness, it is easy to lose ourselves, our boundaries, and our needs. The relationship then begins to suffocate instead of support. On the other hand, when we focus only on freedom and independence, distance, coldness, and a sense of loneliness appear, even if formally we are close to someone. True harmony in relationships is born when both of these needs have their place.

Closeness does not have to mean giving up yourself, and freedom does not have to lead to distance. What allows these two qualities to be integrated is awareness of your own needs, the ability to set boundaries, and honest communication. When you can speak about what you need without fear or guilt, the relationship stops being a battlefield and becomes a space for growth. In such a relationship, you can feel safe and at the same time remain yourself.

Many tensions in relationships arise from unconscious fears. The need for closeness is often confused with dependency, and the need for freedom with rejection. Yet one does not exclude the other. You can love and still need space. You can be close and not lose yourself. The key is understanding that a relationship is not meant to limit us, but to support us in being authentic.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself what your balance between closeness and freedom looks like. Are you able to give space to another person without experiencing it as a threat? Can you speak about your boundaries with gentleness and respect for yourself? The answers to these questions lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and the quality of the bonds you create.

Relationships are not meant to force a choice between yourself and another person. They exist to teach us how to merge two worlds into one whole, where there is room for love, closeness, and freedom at the same time. It is precisely within this duality that the greatest potential for growth is found.

In my e-book “The Duality of Harmony – Choosing the Path to Balance” I show how to recognize your needs in relationships and how to build bonds based on balance rather than sacrifice. I share practices that help create relationships that offer a sense of safety, space, and authentic closeness, without fear, without control, and without losing yourself.

💛 This is the second e-book in the series “Journey to Yourself” – a cycle that guides you through the process of returning to yourself and building a life aligned with the heart. The second stage of this journey is an invitation to create relationships filled with balance, truth, and mutual respect. You can begin it now.
