Why your body does not feel safe – How does stress affect the nervous system?

Many people say to themselves: “Everything is fine, so why do I still feel tension?”. The problem is that the body does not react only to what is happening now. The nervous system remembers experiences from the past and often acts as if the threat still exists, even if the situation changed a long time ago.

If for a long time you lived in stress, tension, pressure, or a constant feeling of uncertainty, your body may have become used to functioning in survival mode. In such a state, the nervous system is alert all the time. It looks for danger, analyzes, predicts, and does not allow you to truly rest.

That is exactly why you may have difficulty relaxing, even when you have a day off. You may feel tension in your body, tightness in your stomach, tense shoulders, or constant tiredness. Sometimes there is also a need to excessively analyze everything and control the situation, because the mind is trying to protect you from something that was difficult in the past.

When the body does not feel safe, it is very difficult to feel calm. Even if nothing bad is happening externally, the nervous system may still react as if danger is close. That does not mean that there is something wrong with you. It only means that your body still needs to feel that it no longer has to fight all the time.

Restoring the feeling of safety begins with working with the body and the nervous system. It is not enough to tell yourself: “calm down”. The body needs specific experiences that will show it that now it can let go of the tension.

Very simple things can be helpful. Calm breathing, regular sleep, movement, contact with nature, a warm shower, a massage, or a few minutes of conscious stillness. These are exactly the kinds of small signals that show the nervous system that it no longer has to be on alert all the time.

It is also worth paying attention to what triggers the most tension in your body. Are there specific situations, people, or thoughts after which you immediately feel tightness and stress? That is often where the information is hidden about what still requires care.

Your body does not need more pressure. It needs to feel that it can finally rest. The more often you give it that experience, the more it will begin to return to its natural state of calm and safety.
