Emotional stability – Why is it not about the lack of emotions, but about contact with yourself?

Many people think that emotional stability means calm without disturbances, lack of difficult emotions and constant “having it together”. This is not true. Emotional stability does not consist in the fact that you stop feeling. It consists in the fact that you are able to go through emotions without losing contact with yourself.

Emotions are a natural part of life. Anger, sadness, fear, frustration and joy appear. The problem begins not when emotions appear, but when they take control over you or when you try to suppress them and pretend that they are not there.

A person who is emotionally stable is not “always calm”. She is able to notice what she feels, name it and give it space. Instead of running away from emotions or analyzing them endlessly, she allows them to flow through the body and awareness.

This is exactly the ability that makes the biggest difference. When you begin to recognize your emotions, they stop being chaos. They become information. They show what is important to you, where your boundaries are and what you need.

Stop for a moment and check how you react to your emotions. Do you try to control them? Do you suppress them? Or maybe you allow them to take over everything and then you lose contact with yourself?

Emotional stability appears when you begin to be present with what you feel. When you do not judge emotions as “bad” or “inappropriate”, but treat them as a natural part of your experience.

An important element is also the body. Emotions are not only a thought. They appear in the body as tension, tightness, heaviness or relaxation. When you learn to notice these signals, it is easier for you to stop and not react automatically.

Thanks to this, emotions stop taking control over your life. Instead of reacting impulsively, you have space to choose what you want to do. This is exactly what true stability is.

It is not the lack of emotions. It is the ability to be with them without losing yourself.
