Internal sense of safety does not mean that life becomes predictable and devoid of difficulties. It means something much more important, the ability to cope with uncertainty without losing contact with yourself. It is a state in which even in changing conditions you feel that you have support within yourself.
Many people try to build safety on the outside. A stable job, relationships, money, a plan for the future. All of this is important, but it is not enough. Because when something changes, and life always changes, tension and fear appear. That is why true safety must arise from within.
The first step is contact with the body. It is the body that reacts first to stress and uncertainty. If you ignore fatigue, tension and the signals that appear in it, it will be difficult for you to feel calm. Returning to the breath, noticing tension and a moment of stopping are simple, but very effective ways to build stability.
The second element is developing awareness of emotions. Internal sense of safety does not consist in not feeling fear or sadness. It consists in being able to recognize them, name them and go through them without the feeling that they are overwhelming you. When you begin to understand your emotions, they stop being chaos and start being information.
The third pillar is trust in your own decisions. If you constantly doubt yourself, look for confirmation on the outside and are afraid to take a step, it is difficult to speak about a sense of safety. Trust is built through action. Every decision, even a small one, that you make in accordance with yourself strengthens this sense.
It is also important that building internal sense of safety is a process. It does not happen from one day to the next. It is a series of small steps that gradually change your reactions, way of thinking and relationship with yourself.
Stop for a moment and check where you are now. Do you have contact with your body? Are you able to recognize emotions? Do you trust yourself in making decisions? It is exactly these areas that show where you can start building your stability.
Internal sense of safety does not consist in everything always being under control. It consists in that even if it is not, you are still with yourself.
In my e-book “The Four Foundations. Building Stability and Security.” I show how to build this sense from within step by step. I share practices that help regulate the nervous system, strengthen trust in yourself and regain calm in everyday life.
